Famous Scary Homes

"Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and even twisted sisters Blanche and Jane Hudson have a knack for creeping us out. Whether it's Halloween or the middle of summer, it's high-time to relive those fears. Behold, our Famous Scary Homes."

House on Haunted Hill
"A weird old guy (Vincent Price in the original) pays guests to stay one night in a haunted house, a place where ceilings drip blood, body parts lurk, and an organ freakily plays by itself. (And please - acid vats in the basement?) The campy movie's exterior shots were at the Frank Lloyd Wright "Ennis House."

For the residents of this house, it's all tricks, no treats. They're stalked by the Tall Man, a terrifying mortician who kills his victims with flying silver balls fitted with blades and a brain-eviscerating drill. Oh, and his minions? They're former dead people he's turned into zombie dwarves.

Skull And Crossbones And Being Chic

"(CBS) Skull and crossbones fashions are all the rage this fall and winter — not just on Halloween!

The trend started with the release this summer of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

Ever since the film became a big hit, the skull and crossbones look has been getting bigger, with stars such as Minnie Driver, Jessica Alba and Natalie Portman sporting it.

It's now used not only on clothes, but on accessories for women and men, and is popular on baby clothes, dog clothes — and even housewares! "

Black Cat Adoptions Banned on Halloween

"BOISE, Idaho - No black cat will cross your path this Halloween, not if a northern Idaho animal shelter can help it. Like many shelters around the country, the Kootenai Humane Society in Coeur d'Alene is prohibiting black cat adoptions from now to Nov. 2, fearing the animals could be mistreated in Halloween pranks _ or worse, sacrificed in some satanic ritual."

Science Of Scare

"With actors, makeup, lights, sounds and a lot of psychology, haunted house maestros learn how to pull the strings of fear.

It’s pitch-black. Your eyes strain to see.

You hear a whisper of rustling cloth, a footfall. You spin in the dark trying to find where it’s coming from.
Suddenly you know someone is standing right behind you.

You run."

Halloween 2006: Thomas Keeley

"Thomas Keeley, a 25 year-old Rhode Island School of Design grad based in New York City, creates three dimensional pieces with creepy Halloween-esque themes. Equipped with wings and fangs, the "Bat Chair" is a slightly sinister yet entirely functional take on a classic café-style chair. A hair brush with dozens of bloody fingertips in place of bristles serves as a very literal interpretation of "running fingers through your hair." Keeley is currently working on illustrations and typography as well as venturing further into chair modifications."

Handbags Of Horror

"If you find scary movies unnerving, brace yourself for the new designer purses they've (obviously) inspired

As various blogs have documented, high fashion has been working
its malnourished butt off lately to make handbags as ugly as possible.
While we're concerned about these purses' self-esteem—how would
you feel if your face were obscured with gratuitous zippers, vomitous
fringe leprous appliques, and macabre pom-poms?—the real
question is: What's behind this trend? "

Green Eggs And Ham

"A group of fellow First-Bookers and I decided to try our hand at the culinary arts. Not just any culinary arts, mind you — children’s-book-inspired culinary arts. The tale you are about to read, a tale in photos, is one of a few, brave, pioneering souls and their quest for green eggs and ham…

First, let me lay out a few basics for you. We entered this experiment in cooking with a simple assumption: food + green food coloring = green food. We decided to partake in this meal as a leisurely Sunday brunch: eggs (of course) and ham or in this case bacon. "

Web Domain Hell.com Is Up For Sale

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Internet domain name Hell.com is scheduled to be sold at a live auction Friday, with organizers expecting bids of more than $1 million, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The online address is the latest to be put up for sale in a growing market for domain names, consisting of Internet addresses people type in for Web sites, which has been fueled by the surge in Internet advertising, the newspaper said.

According to the Journal, the Internet domain company Moniker will conduct a live auction of 300 names that it predicts could generate bids of more than $1 million for some domains, including Iran.com, Auction.com and Elections.com.

Moniker, a unit of the brand and marketing company Seevast Corp., is auctioning Hell.com for BAT Flli LLC, a creative think tank whose founder, 57-year-old Kenneth Aronson, registered the name in 1995, the Journal said.

Since then, it has been home to a secretive online community, a project Aronson says will benefit from the proceeds of the Hell.com, which gets about 5,000 new visitors daily, the paper said.

Aronson told the Journal he won't sell Hell.com for less than several million dollars. "Hell.com is one of the most powerful brands on the Earth," Aronson said."

Update: Hell.com did not sell with a reserve of $2.35M. Article at johnchow.com

Cowboys Coach Claims Rat In Salad

"DALLAS - Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Todd Haley is suing a suburban McDonald's, claiming his wife and the family's live-in baby sitter found a dead rat in a salad they took home and began to eat.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in state district court seeks $1.7 million in damages, The Dallas Morning News reported on its Web site.

In addition to Haley, the Cowboys' passing game coordinator who got in a well-publicized shouting match with receiver Terrell Owens earlier this month, the suit was also filed on behalf of his wife Christine and the family's au pair, Kathryn Kelley."

I'm not lovin' it.

'Grinch' Steals Boy's Halloween

"ENDICOTT -- When the pumpkins in front of his Endicott house were stolen two years ago, Kyle Konecny thought about putting a sign in front of his house to let people know he was mad. When it happened again Sunday, the sign went up.
"I wanted the people who did it to know that I was ticked," Konecny said.
The sign -- which reads, "To whoever stole my kid's pumpkins! Thanks for ruining his Halloween you jerk! He grew them himself!" -- was placed in front of the Konecny house Monday."

How To Drive A Tank

"Protesters in Budapest this week seized a World War II-era tank that had been part of an open-air display and drove it 100m down the road. Is it just a matter of switch on and go?

A tank clattered across the cobbles of Budapest this week in a bizarre throwback to the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. Anti-government protesters hijacked a Soviet-era tank - removed from a museum display - and drove it around before being arrested.

It made me wonder how easy these metal monsters are to drive. You can't just walk up to one, turn an ignition key, and off you go - or can you?"

Toddler Gets Stuck In Vending Machine

"ANTIGO, Wis. - Three-year-old Robert Moore went fishing for a stuffed replica of Sponge Bob and ended up trapped in a vending machine. The toddler's adventure began with a Saturday evening shopping trip with his grandmother, Fredricka Bierdemann, and three siblings.

When she turned her back to get another dollar for a second try, Robert took off his coat and squeezed through an opening in the machine. He landed in the stuffed animal cube."

And after all that he didn't even get the stuffed SpongeBob.

13 Seriously Scary Album Covers

5. Iron Maiden, Killers

"Iron Maiden mascot Eddie The Head has appeared on virtually everything Iron Maiden-related since the band's 1980 debut, but he never looked more sinister than on 1981's Killers. His face is the stuff of nightmares: the decomposing skin, the menacing grin, the soulless eyes, the, um, perfect teeth. (Even zombies should brush and floss!) As a recent victim clutches his surprisingly clean shirt, Eddie wields a bloody ax in one hand with his other arm outstretched. You're next."

Dudes Wearing Eyeliner

"Heidi Klum might be right: In fashion, you're either in or you're out. In rock and roll fashion, though, things aren't so cut and ... sewn. Just like the music itself, some styles never really go away, while others bounce in and out of cool faster than a faux-hawked drummer's double-bass-drum pedal.

Which brings us to the latest hot-or-not accessory: guyliner (i.e. eyeliner on guys)."

Children Aghast As Pelican Swallows Pigeon Whole

"Families strolling through a London park were left shocked when a pelican picked up and swallowed an unsuspecting pigeon.

The Eastern White pelican struggled with the desperately frantic pigeon in its beak for more than 20 minutes before swallowing it whole.

The moment was caught on camera by photographer Cathal McNaughton, who was taking pictures of the wildlife in St James's Park.

The pigeon was still alive when it reached the pelican's stomach, he said. "

Zombie Cake

"The highlight of the party, if I do say so myself, was my zombie cake, which we named Orville, after the dead guy in Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, though it looked nothing like him. In effect, it was a three-dimensional version of our logo, a zombie rising up out of the grave, or, in this case, rising up out of a field of my homemade French cream candies. The head was made of sour cream chocolate chip cake, dyed red to resemble brain matter, covered with modeling chocolate and various other frosting and hard candy details. The hand was made of mint-flavored hard candy bones covered with chocolate. "

Latest Disturbing YouTube Trend: Treadmill Kitties

"Video bloggers and wannabe Web stars have consequently realized that a treadmill is an extremely valuable prop in making the breakout two-minute clip. This has led to many an asinine addition to the YouTube library.

Home video rule #76 states that it's always funnier when animals do it. As a result, the treadmill video trend on YouTube has now spread to cats. What's with this trend of tormenting felines with electronics? The videos of cats' reactions to Roomba vacuums were bad enough. I admit that a lot of them are pretty funny, but the cats probably are in either sheer terror or pure ennui. To use an early-'00s web cliche--Please, think of the kittens."

Not it! Mass. Elementary School Bans Tag

"ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous."

They ought to make them wear helmets at recess, too. Maybe that would cut down on lawsuits.

10 Costumes That Just Won't Fly

"On Halloween, most airline crew members are allowed to wear a costume to work. Some costumes are elaborate and well thought out, while others look like a last-minute throw-together. Sometimes passengers get into the spirit and dress up as well. Every year there is someone — a passenger or a crew member — who takes dress-up a little too far.

The following are costumes that I have actually seen at the airport, along with the consequences that followed. "

The 40 Million Dollar Elbow

"The painting(by Picasso) is owned by Steve Wynn, the casino magnate and collector of masterpieces. He acquired it in a private sale in 2001 from an anonymous collector, who had bought it at auction in 1997 for $48.4 million. Recently, Wynn decided that he’d like to sell it, along with several other museum-quality paintings he owns.

Cohen agreed to pay a hundred and thirty-nine million dollars for it, the highest known price ever paid for a work of art.

As he (Wynn) talked, he had his back to the picture. He was wearing jeans and a golf shirt. Wynn suffers from an eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa, which affects his peripheral vision and therefore, occasionally, his interaction with proximate objects, and, without realizing it, he backed up a step or two as he talked. “So then I made a gesture with my right hand,” Wynn said, “and my right elbow hit the picture. It punctured the picture.” There was a distinct ripping sound. "

Zombie School At Universal Studios

"The Universal lot is teeming with the Undead. I should know, I saw two innocent people attacked and eaten at a press junket. A press junket, people!!

We had been invited to witness "Zombie Zchool", a training course where students learn how to walk, talk and twitch like a real, honest to goodness Zombies. The class was being held in front of the old Bates Motel, which, while still an ominous place, is slightly less formidable with Whoville looming just behind it."

Punk Venue CBGB's Closing After 33 Years

"NEW YORK - Legs McNeil remembers the night back in 1975 when he walked into the dingy storefront club perched in the even dingier Bowery neighborhood. The band onstage, four guys in leather jackets and torn jeans, was the Ramones. McNeil sat at a nearby table, watching their set with Lou Reed.

It was unforgettable. But as McNeil would soon discover, it was just a typical night at CBGB's, the club that spawned punk rock while launching the careers of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Blondie, the Talking Heads and the Ramones."
